Just Batty is an enjoyable, low keyed, gentle story in which the reader learns much about Hayden's daily living on a farm with his mother, father, grandmother and grandfather. One evening at the supper table he tells his family that today in school he learned about bats. He told them how bats fly at night and eat lots of insects. He told them bats are losing paces to live and how they might not be around someday. He showed them pictures and papers telling how to care for bats and how to protect them. Two weeks later a package arrives containing parts for a bat house. "We will put it up tomorrow" dad tells him. The next day, grandma, grandpa and Hayden watch as his father and uncle put the bat house on a tall pole by the pond. After a cookout that evening, while watching to see if any bats would find their new home, Hayden's mother tells him, "it might take a while for the bats to find their new home." "That's okay Mom. It's just a nice feeling to do something to help them."
At the end of the book there are websites where you can find facts about bat conservation and how to build a bat box.
