I received an email asked for marketing advice from an author the other day. He was doing all the right things on social media, and he has a couple good books.
He has done paid advertising on Amazon and other platforms with lukewarm results. Personally, I do not do paid advertising. I always end up losing money. This author used to go out to events and book clubs talks but has not been out in a while.
I tell all my authors you have to get your butts out the door and make yourself visible to your readers. If they don't know you exist how can they buy your books? Even the big authors still go out and do book signings and speaking engagements. Your readers need to see you as a person.
Authors also need a Facebook Author page where they can engage their readers in their lives and not just sell their books. I tell my readers about my grandson who I homeschooled or about the events I'm going to and how I did during the hurricanes.
Another thing is how are you publishing? Remember KDP (Amazon) is a retailer. You need a distributer like Ingram Spark to get your books to a wider audience. Ask questions of your publisher. Who are they distributing your book to? You want to go as wide as possible. Are they only uploading to KDP?
